Living Lent: 40 Days to Fast and Reflect

Good news, my friends, Lent is almost here!  The season of Lent begins February 17.  This is the church season that we spend in prayer and reflection, making our hearts and minds ready to journey with Jesus to the cross and beyond.  The traditional practices of Lent are prayer, fasting and alms giving.  As we enter into Lenten worship and spiritual practices, we will support each other in these practices and on our Lenten journeys.  You will receive information about our Holy Week schedule at a later date.

Here are the ways that you can join with your church family to Live Lent:
Tuesday, February 16: Shrove Tuesday,
Pancake Supper, 6PM-7PM

Shrove Tuesday began as a way for people to get all the fat and sugar out of their house before they began the Lenten fast.  It is a time for the last bit of fun and frivolity before the more reflective period of Lent.
So, make some pancakes, and join us for a Zoom dinner.  We will gather at 6pm on a link that will be provided.  You will be put into a break out room with 3 other devices.  We invite you to eat dinner together over Zoom and enjoy a long held tradition while maintaining pandemic restrictions.

Wednesday, February 17
Ash Wednesday service, 7:45am on Zoom,
Imposition of ashes 8:20-10am, outside of the church

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is the time that we begin a focus on repentance and prayer and profess our devotion to God as we receive the cross of ashes on our forehead or hand.  The ashes symbolize our desire to repent and an acknowledgment of our need for God.  During our service you will be given time to reflect on your own Lenten fast.

Join us on Zoom for a brief Ash Wednesday service, then drive to the church anytime between 8:20 and !0am.  Rev. Lori will be there to offer you a cross of ashes on your forehead or hand.  Please do not get out of your car, please wear a mask.  Lori will be sanitizing her hands and between each imposition of ashes (using a Qtip for each imposition, for utmost safety).

Weekly Lenten Spiritual Practice
Mondays, February 22 to March 29, 9am
Naramata Centre Beach

Prayer is one of the traditional Lenten practices.  Gather every Monday morning, rain or snow or shine to “walk the rounds”.  Walking the rounds is a  ancient Celtic practice of listening prayer.  You walk around the perimeter of something- a room, a building, a yard, a property, a village even- three times.  The intention is to spend time in silence, listening for God’s voice.  Often, you take a question with you as you walk.  So, we will gather to listen to God separately, on our own walk, but be all together in prayer.  Plan to spend about a half hour each Monday morning.
Lenten Book Study
Wednesdays March 3-24, 7-8:15pm, on Zoom

The season of Lent is a time to make space for self reflection about how God is asking us to repent- or turn towards God’s way.  This year, we will read and discuss the book, White Fragility.  Please buy or borrow the book and RSVP to Lori’s email address if you would like to attend.  And feel free to bring a friend.   revlori@naramatachurch.ca
